Case 1: “Friends from Another Planet” — Randal and Elizabeth Richmond (pseudonyms)

Original published source per Dennett: Flying Saucer Review, autumn 1993 issue. Investigator: Donald M. Ware (former MUFON Florida State Director).

The 1973 sighting

One afternoon in 1973, married couple “Randal and Elizabeth Richmond” (pseudonyms) drove westbound on State Road 24 (Dennett later misspeaks as “14”) through the Black Hills National Forest, northeastern Wyoming, returning to their rural home. Elizabeth was 51 years old and wore a wig. They saw a large fiery red dome-shaped object hovering off to the side of the road, appearing about four times the size of the sun. There was “a strange shift,” and the next thing they remembered they were looking at the sun low on the horizon in the western sky — confirming they had lost time. Arriving home, they found it was an hour later than expected. The next morning, Elizabeth discovered a cut above her lip she could not account for. Randal began having repeated nightmares of being in their car on a hill drifting backwards — for several weeks until the nightmares stopped.

The 14-year delay

By coincidence, shortly after the encounter, they attended a J. Allen Hynek lecture and were amazed to see a photograph similar to what they had seen. They had earlier read John Fuller’s “Interrupted Journey” (the Betty and Barney Hill case). They did not pursue the missing-time angle at the time.

In 1984, Randal Richmond died.

In 1987, Elizabeth read Bud Hopkins’s book “Intruders” (the Kathie Davis case + abduction theory framework), which “brought back the memory” of her UFO sighting and the missing hour. She attended a Pensacola MUFON meeting in her home state of Florida and spoke with other “experiencers.” She approached researcher Dr. Dan Overlade (well-known for hypnotizing contactees), who declined due to caseload but instructed her in self-hypnosis and meditation for memory retrieval.

What she recalled under self-hypnosis

Elizabeth used the countdown-relaxation technique Overlade described. She “immediately broke through the walls of amnesia” and recalled:

  • She was paralyzed in the car
  • The car was pulled backwards, levitated up off the mountain road, and into an opening in the bottom of a huge circular craft
  • They were surrounded by 4-5 foot tall gray ETs with large dome-shaped bald heads, huge black almond-shaped wraparound eyes, small noses, slit mouths, long dangling arms with claw-like nails, dressed in metallic gray jumpsuits
  • She was separated from her husband and taken to a room with an examination table
  • Seven grays surrounded her (three on each side, one at foot)
  • A gray took her hand and communicated telepathically that she should not fear
  • She had a long telepathic conversation
  • The grays passed “a large eyelike instrument” over her body
  • They inserted an instrument up her nose and into her sinus cavity
  • They did “some sort of procedure to the back of her head”
  • They were amused to discover her wig
  • A gray named “Mag” said he had known her when she was one of them, that they had been mates, and that they had two daughters aboard the spacecraft
  • Two ET “daughters” were brought into the room; Elizabeth felt she knew them
  • The grays told her she had “volunteered to reincarnate on Earth” to help “usher in a new era of world peace”
  • An implant was placed in her head to help her remember her ET daughters

Elizabeth used self-hypnosis two more times; the same details recurred. She then used meditation to establish what she believes is ongoing telepathic communication with the ETs.

The information she says the ETs provided

Via meditation-based telepathic communication after the initial recall:

  • Their home planet is in the Sirius star system
  • They have “overcome wars, disease, and any unkind or selfish thoughts”
  • They live “largely underground in cities protected by transparent shatterproof material”
  • “Great storehouses of resources to provide for everybody’s needs”
  • “Everyone works for the good of everyone”
  • “No money, no competition, no greed”
  • They monitor Earth and humanity closely at all times
  • Earth will undergo “great changes” requiring their assistance to survive
  • This is why they are permitting their presence to be widely known
  • “Many will transition from the physical realm to the spiritual realms” (i.e., die)
  • “Some will survive and some will be transplanted to other planets where they can adapt”
  • “A new era of world peace will reign”
  • Elizabeth’s ET soul entered her body at age 22 during the birth of her first son (a “walk-in” event)
  • She had nearly died during that pregnancy and “felt like she was a much different person, stronger and tougher” afterwards

Elizabeth’s background per Dennett

  • Claims many psychic experiences throughout her life
  • 1956 (age 34): received a clear telepathic message: “You have been chosen to carry the word”
  • Age 40: began experiencing messages from deceased people, mediumship, including from the renowned psychic Edgar Cayce

Researcher endorsement (Donald M. Ware, FSR autumn 1993)

“She is a kind lady who gave us no reason to doubt her truthfulness. We consider this case to be a significant unknown of the CE4 type because of the credibility of the witness and the content of the reality it describes. This seems to be another case indicating that now is the time for an abductee to remember some previously blocked information.”

Dennett’s framing

“Truly astonishing case. It’s a shame that the husband passed away and wasn’t able to share his side of the story, but I like the case because it was investigated by a very experienced researcher. Again, it does not involve hypnosis [note: it does — self-hypnosis] and there’s just so much information… She was basically given a tour of the craft, had a long conversation with the ETs, learned why they were here, where they’re from, and they also provided information about upcoming Earth changes, this is a very common message received by contactees. They also said that should there be an existential crisis, and they said that there will be. They will be scooping people off the planet and relocating them to other planets.”

Other cases in the video (not the focus of the user’s question)

The video covers six other cases briefly enumerated for context:

  1. Anatoly “Tolya” Malishev — Kostino, Russia, July 21, 1975; age 17; human-looking ETs in silver suits; trip to another planet; nuclear-holocaust warning
  2. Juan Jorge Gomez — Rosario, Argentina, June 16, 1980; short humanoids in yellow jumpsuits; levitation
  3. Anonymous Texas man — March 7, 1988; red lights, beam, telepathic reassurance
  4. Anonymous 12-year-old girl — Laugharne, Wales, 1989; gray ETs in turquoise jumpsuits
  5. Timothy Brandenburg — Centerville, Indiana, June 8, 1991; “aliens took my twenty dollar bill”
  6. “Luis” (pseudonym) — San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, 1992; green-gray humanoids; trip to another planet

All seven are presented in the same evidentiary register: subjective recall of structured craft + ET encounter, frequently with hypnosis or other memory-recovery techniques, channeled or reported “information” from the ETs about Earth, the future, the ET civilization, and (in several cases) the witness’s own special status.

Provenance chain

The Richmond case provenance is:

  1. Elizabeth Richmond (pseudonym; identity not publicly verifiable) → self-hypnosis and meditation in 1987, 14 years after the 1973 event, after reading Hopkins’s “Intruders”
  2. Dr. Dan Overlade — Florida-based researcher who instructed her in self-hypnosis technique but did not himself hypnotize her
  3. Donald M. Ware — MUFON Florida State Director, investigated and wrote up the case
  4. Flying Saucer Review — published autumn 1993 (UK ufology journal founded 1955, edited at various times by Brinsley Le Poer Trench, Gordon Creighton; mixed editorial standards over its history; known for both serious case investigation and credulous contactee material)
  5. Preston Dennett — repackaged into the 2026 YouTube video that the Reddit thread shares
