Michael Shellenberger (b. 1971) — American author, journalist, and political commentator; founder of the Public Substack. Time “Hero of the Environment” (2008); author of Apocalypse Never (2020) and San Fransicko (2021). A former progressive environmental activist who shifted to a heterodox/right-of-center, pro-nuclear, anti-”censorship” posture; ran for California governor as an independent (2022).
- Twitter Files. Public shared the 2023 Dao Journalism Prize (with Racket and The Free Press) for Twitter Files work. His April 2024 “Twitter Files – Brazil” prompted Brazilian congressional inquiry and hearings; investigative journalists subsequently flagged multiple errors in that reporting.
- Reliability rating. Media Bias/Fact Check rates Public right-biased, “mixed” factual reporting — citing transparency and investigative content but “repeated fact-check failures, selective sourcing, and one-sided framing.” He has been criticized for “bad science” claims in Apocalypse Never.

In October 2024 he reported on Public the existence of an alleged DoD unacknowledged special-access program, “Immaculate Constellation,” based on a whistleblower document. He gave the document to Rep. Nancy Mace, who entered it into the Congressional Record at the Nov 13, 2024 House Oversight UAP hearing, where Shellenberger testified. The document and program remain unverified (the named author, Michael Brown, emerged April 2025).
