[00:00:02.800] Hey everybody, you know who that is? [00:00:04.160] That’s [00:00:04.584] >> [cheering] [00:00:05.760] >> the great Steven Spielberg, director of [00:00:07.860] [applause] the new film Disclosure Day. [00:00:11.120] As as Josh O’Connor’s character is [00:00:12.720] saying there that the the math he’s [00:00:14.680] written out, to him he sees that and he [00:00:17.000] hears that language in this math. Math [00:00:20.440] and music played a big part in [00:00:21.920] communication in Close Encounters of the [00:00:24.560] Third Kind in 1977. [00:00:26.720] Um, how have your feelings [00:00:28.820] >> [applause] [00:00:31.320] >> How have your feelings about [00:00:33.160] extraterrestrials [00:00:34.840] and and extraterrestrial encounters [00:00:37.080] evolved over the last 49 years? Well, [00:00:39.880] I’ve been interested in in everything [00:00:41.840] involving, [00:00:43.280] you know, uh, what’s out there and the [00:00:45.840] whole big question is, cuz I believe [00:00:47.840] that certainly there is, you know, the [00:00:50.200] cosmos is teeming with life. Uh, the big [00:00:53.480] question is, has that life ever at any [00:00:56.760] epic in our history visited here [00:00:59.480] or is that life currently interacting [00:01:01.200] with us now and and and has that life [00:01:03.320] been interacting with us for many years? [00:01:05.519] I’ve always been interested in this. [00:01:06.960] When I made Close Encounters, for me it [00:01:09.680] was a story that I thought, wouldn’t it [00:01:11.960] be great when this movie comes out, [00:01:14.720] wouldn’t it be great if people like this [00:01:16.520] movie they come out and they see Close [00:01:17.800] Encounters and wouldn’t it be great if [00:01:19.800] this someday could all come true? [00:01:21.960] Wouldn’t it be great if this could be [00:01:24.280] true someday? [00:01:25.560] And with everything that’s happened from [00:01:27.040] 1977 till today, I can now make [00:01:30.960] Disclosure Day and say, [00:01:33.840] isn’t it going to be wonderful when [00:01:35.120] people realize after seeing this movie [00:01:36.840] that everything is true and has been [00:01:39.120] true? That’s the big difference. Steven [00:01:41.840] Spielberg, I want you to be right. I [00:01:44.320] want to be right, too. [00:01:45.320] >> I want you to be right. [00:01:46.480] >> I want to be right. I’m not I want there [00:01:48.320] to be aliens out there. What I want to [00:01:49.680] know is, do you know things that we [00:01:51.000] don’t know, Steven Spielberg? Are you [00:01:53.280] sure? Because the government’s dumping a [00:01:54.880] lot of this alien stuff right now, right [00:01:56.800] when your movie’s coming out and it [00:01:58.000] seems pretty fishy. [00:01:59.000] >> Yeah, they haven’t they haven’t dumped [00:02:00.840] it on me. I interviewed Obama recently [00:02:03.479] about this because I think you saw it [00:02:04.960] maybe he did an interview where he said, [00:02:06.200] “No, no, no, there’s aliens out there.” [00:02:08.039] And I asked him about it and he did the [00:02:09.360] old backpedal going, “I mean I hope [00:02:11.080] there are aliens out there.” And [00:02:14.040] so obviously he’s holding stuff back [00:02:16.040] from us. [00:02:16.896] >> [laughter] [00:02:17.800] >> But he said I said, “Who do you think [00:02:19.640] should like go represent us if if they [00:02:21.720] land here?” And he goes, “What about [00:02:23.000] me?” You know, he goes, [00:02:24.880] “I’m a guy, I’m a nice guy.” [00:02:27.440] Who do you think should represent us and [00:02:28.760] keep in mind that I am available very [00:02:30.320] soon? [00:02:32.680] You know, I think I should represent I I [00:02:34.760] mean my whole thing is I shouldn’t [00:02:36.240] should be me. [00:02:37.856] >> [applause] [00:02:38.840] >> Everybody wants the gig. [00:02:41.560] I I love Barack. I love Barack. We’re [00:02:44.080] friends. I love him. I love his family, [00:02:45.880] but he’s had his eight years, you know. [00:02:50.000] I I I think the whole thing is [00:02:52.720] I made Close Encounters. I my first [00:02:55.600] alien movie I was 17 years old. It was [00:02:57.480] called Firelight in 8 mm. I made E.T. [00:03:00.800] and I I produced co-produced Men in [00:03:02.800] Black. [00:03:04.057] >> [cheering and applause] [00:03:04.320] >> And and War of the Worlds and [00:03:06.480] >> Now you’re just bragging. [00:03:07.519] >> No, I’m not bragging. [00:03:09.080] Here the here’s the point I’m trying to [00:03:10.440] make. I made all these movies where I’ve [00:03:12.519] kind of played an ambassadorial role. [00:03:15.640] They’ve never shown themselves to me. [00:03:17.480] Why is that? It’s so unfair. [00:03:19.800] Wow. It’s so unfair. Wow, they’re afraid [00:03:22.120] they’ll use the footage and cut it into [00:03:23.400] one of your films and their cover will [00:03:25.080] be blown. [00:03:25.880] >> Well, something like that. I don’t have [00:03:27.680] no idea, but I’m available, guys. [00:03:30.760] You said just now [00:03:32.877] >> [applause] [00:03:33.000] >> you mentioned [00:03:34.440] that you’re you know, one of your your [00:03:35.760] you made your first alien film when you [00:03:37.000] were 17 on on Super 8 film. And I’m just [00:03:39.920] curious, are you a different [00:03:43.680] director? I assume you’re a different [00:03:44.840] director. [00:03:45.880] Has your love of film and the reason why [00:03:47.800] you love it changed from when you were [00:03:49.600] that boy making the films till now? [00:03:51.519] >> It’s a it’s a terrific question. Thank [00:03:53.920] you so much. [00:03:55.120] >> question. That’s all we have time for. [00:03:56.800] >> answering I’m I’m not answering that [00:03:58.240] question unless you get us another [00:03:59.840] season. Okay. I I think [00:04:02.400] nobody I don’t know myself. Everybody [00:04:04.120] thinks we know ourselves. We don’t know [00:04:05.440] ourselves. We evolve, we change. I’ve [00:04:07.280] got seven kids, six grandkids. Uh the [00:04:09.640] kids change you. You’re different with [00:04:11.600] each child. You’re different with each [00:04:13.760] day as life goes on. You learn different [00:04:15.760] things. You You get wisdom points. Maybe [00:04:17.720] you lose wisdom points. But in any case, [00:04:20.160] the movies reflect who I am at any [00:04:22.640] different point in my life. So, whoever [00:04:24.840] I was when I was 17 [00:04:26.919] and whoever I am I am now, there’s been [00:04:28.640] a lot of differences, but the one thing [00:04:30.200] that hasn’t changed [00:04:31.680] is my love for telling stories, my love [00:04:35.440] for telling stories for an audience, for [00:04:37.480] all of you, and my love for telling [00:04:39.880] stories uh just because I like doing it [00:04:42.919] because it’s a thing that I can’t do [00:04:45.080] anything else except that very well. [00:04:46.800] This is what I do better than other [00:04:48.160] things. Um I just feel that, you know, [00:04:51.520] it was my um [00:04:53.680] it’s just something that I love to do [00:04:54.960] and that hasn’t changed since I was a [00:04:56.720] kid. The same joy of going to the set [00:04:58.880] every day. [00:05:00.680] The same breathless kind of anticipation [00:05:02.800] and the scariness of going to the set [00:05:04.320] every day. The stage fright, which I get [00:05:06.480] even now when I’m making a movie, [00:05:08.080] believe it or not. Uh please believe it, [00:05:10.040] it’s true. Uh is no different than when [00:05:12.400] I first was a kid and started [00:05:14.360] experimenting with 8 mm. [00:05:16.240] Hasn’t changed. Well, Steven, thank you [00:05:18.040] so much for being here. Thank you so [00:05:19.560] much. [00:05:21.480] The Post your Day is in theaters June [00:05:23.640] 12th. Steven Spielberg, everybody. We’ll [00:05:26.400] be right back with a performance by [00:05:28.360] David Byrne. [00:05:30.123] >> [music] [00:05:37.328] [music] [00:05:42.568] [cheering]
