The Black Vault — John Greenewald Jr. FOIA archive

A privately-run public archive of FOIA-released US government documents, founded by John Greenewald Jr. in 1996 (initially as a teenager). The archive grew to approximately 3.8 million files by 2026, making it the largest single repository of declassified US government UFO/UAP documents outside government custody. Greenewald is one of the most prolific FOIA requesters in US history; his archive has been the primary public access point for documents from AATIP, AARO, AAWSAP, and earlier government UFO programs (Project Blue Book residuum, NICAP-era correspondence, etc.).

This source file consolidates the archive’s documentary role + tracks the February 23, 2026 wipe event, in which the entire 3.8M-file archive disappeared from public access one day after Trump’s February 19-20, 2026 UAP disclosure directive (trump-uap-disclosure-directive-2026-02-20).

The archive’s role in the disclosure cycle

The Black Vault serves three load-bearing functions in the modern UAP-discourse ecosystem:

  1. Primary-document access. Many post-2017 disclosure-cycle journalism stories cite Black Vault as the source for FOIA-released government documents. The infobase references include:

  2. Adversarial-to-officialdom independent verification. Greenewald operates outside the DoD/Pentagon institutional perimeter. When Sean Kirkpatrick or AARO makes a claim, Greenewald can (and does) file FOIA requests against the same agencies to surface contradictory documentary evidence. This is the independent-verifier role the credibility framework calls for (see community-credibility-assessment, institutional-packaging trap section).

  3. Long-term institutional memory. Many of the documents in the archive are from agencies that have themselves rotated personnel multiple times. Greenewald maintains a continuous record across administration changes. The archive is older than AARO, older than AATIP-as-public-knowledge, and older than the entire post-2017 disclosure cycle.

The February 23, 2026 wipe event

Timeline:

  • February 19-20, 2026: Trump posts UAP disclosure directive on Truth Social (trump-uap-disclosure-directive-2026-02-20): “I will be directing the Secretary of War, and other relevant Departments and Agencies, to begin the process of identifying and releasing Government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs)…”
  • February 23, 2026 (approximately one day after Trump’s directive): The Black Vault’s public archive — 3.8 million files — is wiped clean and becomes inaccessible.
  • Daily Mail publishes report (blackvault-wipe-2026-02-23 if/when captured) characterizing the event as “Black Vault Mystery.”

Greenewald’s response (per Daily Mail / X statement):

“[They] had no idea what happened, and on their side, they said it was a deletion, not corruption.”

Greenewald said he “did not fully suspect foul play” but noted he “couldn’t rule out the possibility because of the suspicious information he had received from the website hosting provider.” The hosting provider characterized the loss as a deletion rather than data corruption — a distinction that matters substantively because deletion implies an authorization event (whether by Greenewald, by an actor with access to his credentials, or by the hosting provider itself), whereas corruption implies a technical fault.

Contextual signal: Reddit propagation (1rct8wc, Feb 23 2026, 5,425 score) surfaced the connection to Greenewald’s outstanding FOIA request on “Immaculate Constellation,” a reportedly significant SAP-related document set. u/silv3rbull8 (Reddit OP statement): “Maybe the Pentagon is still mad over Greenewald’s FOIA for the Immaculate Constellation data. Just creating a nuisance for him in revenge.” The “Immaculate Constellation” target had been on Greenewald’s FOIA stack since at least October 2024, when Michael Shellenberger first reported on it (Public.news), and a 12-page document by that name was entered into the Congressional Record by Rep. Nancy Mace on November 13, 2024 — making this one of the most-pressured FOIA targets in the modern UAP record. Why the timing is structurally significant

The 24-48 hour gap between Trump’s disclosure directive and the Black Vault wipe is the load-bearing data point. Three readings are available:

Reading 1: Independent coincidence. Hosting-provider-level failures occur. The hosting provider attributed the event to deletion rather than corruption; deletion can result from operator error, credential compromise unrelated to UAP, or platform-side action. The 24-hour gap could be coincidence.

Reading 2: Adversarial action timed to disclosure cycle. The 3.8M-file archive contained materials that contradicted the narrative the Trump administration intends to establish. Wiping the archive removes the contradictory documentary record before the official “disclosure” is announced. This is the most-circulated Reddit framing (u/Hennessey_carter, u/SireLugus, u/Minute_Leadership_58): “erasing evidence to create a whole new narrative.”

Reading 3: Adversarial action against Greenewald specifically. Greenewald has multiple outstanding FOIA requests — including the “Immaculate Constellation” request — that the Pentagon would prefer not to be fulfilled. Disrupting his archive infrastructure is a separate-from-disclosure-cycle pressure mechanism. The timing alignment with the Trump directive could be opportunistic rather than directly-caused.

The credibility-framework move is to record all three readings, note that none is yet established by independent investigation, and watch for the falsification indicators (see below).

Reddit reception (1rct8wc, 5,425 score, Feb 23 2026)

The thread reception is unusually unified in skeptical-of-officialdom framing:

  • u/Hennessey_carter (112 score): “I can see our government doing this so they can release the information again and pretend like it is new information and they are ‘releasing the UFO files’.”
  • u/Minute_Leadership_58 (22 score): “Probably because the data on there is steeped with misinformation they have sown, trying to cover their tracks before the actual information is released.”
  • u/banaslee (32 score): “Could be an attempt to control the narrative so not many contradicting pieces of evidence exist out there once the official ones come out. But if no backups were made, I call bullshit.”
  • u/AiCapone21 (16 score): “A red flag. If john suddenly is not alive anymore in a few days, that would make it real red flag.” — explicit invocation of the UAP-research-deaths pattern applied to Greenewald
  • u/UberGoobler (24 score): “There it is everybody! There’s Trump’s disclosure! He’s really ushering us into this new era! I can’t wait for his next 4D Chess move! /s”

The community framing aligns Greenewald with the disclosure-cycle independent-verifier role and reads the wipe as adversarial to that role.

Subsequent status

As of source-file date (May 2026):

  • Whether the Black Vault was restored, partially restored, or remains offline is not captured in the existing infobase. Re-fetch needed to confirm current archive state.
  • Greenewald is alive and continuing to post (no indication that the u/AiCapone21 “red flag” prediction materialized).
  • The “Immaculate Constellation” FOIA request remains a tracked open item.
  • No independent investigation has identified the deletion-actor or confirmed any of the three readings above.

Falsification window

Toward Reading 2 (adversarial-to-narrative):

  • Trump administration releases UAP “disclosure” content that materially contradicts what Black Vault had previously published
  • Greenewald’s specific contradiction-points are absent from the official disclosure
  • Subsequent FOIA requests by Greenewald or others show evidence of selective document destruction or modification

Toward Reading 1 (coincidence):

  • Black Vault is fully restored from backups within reasonable timeframe
  • Hosting-provider-level explanation produces specific technical cause unrelated to UAP
  • No subsequent suspicious events affect Greenewald or his work

Toward Reading 3 (Pentagon retribution specifically):

  • Greenewald experiences additional disruption (FOIA stonewalling, harassment, legal action) in the 12-24 months following
  • “Immaculate Constellation” or other outstanding FOIA requests are explicitly denied or stalled
  • Other independent UAP-FOIA-archive operators experience similar disruptions

The honest bottom line

The Black Vault wipe is a tracked event of structural significance to the UAP-disclosure-cycle credibility framework. The timing alignment with Trump’s disclosure directive (~24 hours) is the central anomaly. The hosting-provider attribution to “deletion not corruption” closes off the simplest mundane explanation. Greenewald’s measured public response (“did not fully suspect foul play” but “couldn’t rule out”) is the credibility-positive register — neither dismissing nor confirming malicious action.

Re-fetch priority: confirm current Black Vault status (restored / partially restored / offline), capture any Greenewald public statements from March-May 2026, track “Immaculate Constellation” FOIA outcome.
